Course Overview


This course provides Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses the knowledge and skills to assess patient who require nasogastric tube, perform insertion of nasogastric tube (NGT) and care of patients with NGT.



By the end of this course, the learners will be able to:

  1. state the indications of NGT insertion
  2. perform patient assessment prior to NGT insertion
  3. identify risk factors and contraindication of NGT insertion
  4. demonstrate NGT insertion
  5. demonstrate knowledge of various methods to troubleshoot
  6. demonstrate correct technique to check NGT placement
  7. perform patient education related to the care of NGT

Chin Kui Joong

Senior Lecturer, Programme Lead and Course Manager (Nursing), Parkway College of Nursing and Allied Health

Ms Chin Kui Joong is a senior lecturer and programme lead and course manager of nursing in Parkway College of Nursing and Allied Health. She has over 49 years of experience, and holds a master’s in social science (counselling) from the University of South Australia (2007), a master’s in healthcare management from the University of Sydney (2004), a Bachelor in Nursing from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia (1995), a diploma in adult continuing education (DACE) (2016) and several advanced certificates in training, assessment, teaching and learning. Prior to joining Parkway College, she has worked in NYP as an assistant manager, NUH as a senior nurse manager and SGH as a staff nurse. Her area of specialization includes oncology nursing, healthcare management, ISO lead auditor and teaching English for speakers of other languages. She has also been involved in nursing skills’ teaching for the diploma in nursing course, and clinical supervision of student nursing at hospitals.

Course Fees: $520.00 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in
eligible community care organisations.
