Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS

This course provides the basic knowledge, desirable attitude and first aid skills to connects with persons with mental health issues who display behaviours of concern.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the learners will be able to:

  • identify various mental health issues and abnormal behaviours
  • demonstrate de-escalation and communication techniques
  • practice basic mental health first aids who displays abnormal behaviours during crisis situations

    3. Symptomatology (Basic)
    4. Crisis & aggression
    5. Crisis de-escalation
    6. Grief & loss
    7. Grief management
    8. Suicidal tendencies & behaviours
    9. Suicide management

Please Note:

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.

Helen Joon Kum Eng

Senior Nurse Educator

Ms Helen Joon Kum Eng is a senior nurse educator with over 27 years of experience. She holds a Master of education from the University of Western Australia (2017). Her area of specialization includes mental health, nursing education, basic cardiac and life support/ AED, preceptorship training, crisis management and management of aggressive behavior. She has been involved in training for hospital wide staff, lecturing at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Parkway College and curriculum reviewing at Nanyang Polytechnic.

Thomas Mohan Felix

Senior Lecturer

Mr Thomas Mohan Felix is a senior lecturer with over 13 years of experience. He holds a Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Psychology from the Tamilnadu DR MGR Medical University, India (2009). His area of specialization includes nursing education, BCLS+AED instructor and Psychology and Mental Health. He has also been involved in delivering mental health first aid, counselling students and mentees and emotional regulation relaxation training for nursing students.

Course Fees: $355.14 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in
eligible community care organisations.
