Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS

This course aims to equip nurses with the skill and knowledge to induct and precept newly-recruited nurses, support care staff and healthcare students. It will also provide them with the knowledge and confidence to utilize the On-the-Job Training (OJT) framework to train and assess staff core competencies. It is hoped that the values, skills and knowledge taught will be able to help them in their new role in preceptorship and able to provide effective guidance and supervision to junior care staff.

 

At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the expectations and characteristics of an exemplary preceptor.
  2. Explain the necessary steps to prepare for a successful precepting experience.
  3. Demonstrate effective precepting skills to enhance clinical or work-based learning.
  4. Apply workplace-based assessments and adult learning theory to precepting.
  5. Formulate effective feedback to improve participant’s clinical skills and competencies.
  6. Reflect on challenges in precepting and strategies in overcoming them.
  7. Discuss strategies for continuing personal, professional and leadership development.

Assessment date is on 28 September 2023 (9am – 5pm) at KWSH.

Please Note:

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.

Staff nurse with over 2 year of nursing experience AND has not undergone any ITE TTT course.

Ms Sim Puay Cheng

Assistant Director, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Ms Sim Puay Cheng is a highly experienced nurse leader with over 30 years of clinical experience and is currently working as an Assistant Director of Nursing (Education) at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH). She holds several qualifications: Master of Arts (Human Resource Development) (SIM-George Washington University, USA / 1999), Bachelor of Nursing (La Trobe University, Australia / 1993), Post-Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (National Institute of Education / Singapore / 2013), and WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training & Assessment (CBLD, Singapore / 2010). Her area of specialization includes critical care, gerontology, infection control and nursing education.

Ms Wei LingLing

Senior Nurse Educator, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Ms Wei LingLing is a Senior Nurse Educator with Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital. With 20 years of experience specializing in clinical training across a variety of healthcare systems and cultural settings.

  • Her career has spanned diverse nursing positions including staff RN in the ICU, Clinical Database Specialist, Lecturer and Regional Clinical Educator. She holds a Master of Health Services Management from Griffith University.
  • She has won numerous awards for her commitment and contributions to the nursing profession, including Excellent Service Award and COVID-19 Resilience Medal.
  • She is a firm believer in lifelong learning and the endless possibilities that exist for committed public health professionals to positively impact the public’s health.

Course Fees: $339.49 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in eligible community care organizations.
