Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the requirements for handling and collection of different types of waste
  2. Differentiate different types of wastes
  3. Demonstrate proper methods of bag closure, handling and collection
  4. Demonstrate procedures for handling common problems

  1. Introduction to universal or standard precaution
  2. Performing Hand hygiene
  3. Donning and removing Personal protective equipment
  4. Types of wastes in healthcare
  5. Principles and considerations for waste collection
  6. Methods for waste handling, collection and disposal
    1. Infectious waste bags and containers
    2. Sharps
    3. Chemical waste
    4. Pharmaceutical waste
    5. Radioactive waste
  7. Handling common problems

Please Note:

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.

Dr Khaw Aik Kia

Operations Manager, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Dr Khaw has accumulated over 18 years of healthcare management experience, having worked in both private and public healthcare sector. He is currently working as a Operations Manager at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH). He holds several qualifications: Doctor of Philosophy (National University of Singapore / Singapore / 2010), Master of Healthcare Management (Flinders University / Australia / 2018), Master of Science in Microbiology, Molecular Biology (University Putra Malaysia / Malaysia 2001), Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (University Putra Malaysia / Malaysia 2000), and Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support – Caregiving Level (Caregiver Academy / Singapore / 2017).

Ms Sim Puay Cheng

Senior Nurse Educator, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Ms Sim is a registered nurse with over 30 years of clinical experience. She is currently working as a Senior Nurse Educator at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH). She holds several qualifications: Master of Arts (Human Resource Development) (SIM-George Washington University, USA / 1999), Bachelor of Nursing (La Trobe University, Australia / 1993), Post-Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (National Institute of Education / Singapore / 2013), and WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training & Assessment (CBLD, Singapore / 2010). Her area of specialization includes critical care, gerontology, infection control and nursing education.

Ms Serene Tan Shi Ling

Nurse Clinician, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Ms Serene Tan Shi Ling is a registered nurse with over 10 years of clinical experience. She is currently working as a Nurse Clinician at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH). She holds several qualifications: Bachelor of Nursing (La Trobe University, Australia / 2010), Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Critical Care) (Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore / 2008), WSQ Diploma in Adult and Continuing Education (IAL, Singapore / 2015), WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training & Assessment (ITE, Singapore / 2010), Diploma in Nursing (Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore / 2006), and ITE Certificate in Nursing (Institute of Technical Education, Singapore / 2003).

Course Fees: $80.00 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in eligible community care organisations.
