Falls Prevention in the Elderly (Intermediate)

Course Overview

This course aims to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills to manage fall risks and improve mobility for residents within a nursing home setting.

This course consists of 3 modules:

  1. Fall Risks Management
  2. Exercise and Use of Assistive Devices for Mobility
  3. Medications and Fall Risk in the Elderly

 

Module 1 – Fall Risks Management

  1. Introduction to falls in Nursing Homes
  2. Identifying risk factors to falls
  3. Falls Risk Screening in Community
  4. Falls Risk Assessment in the Nursing Home
  5. Falls Prevention Approach in the Community Care Sector

 

Module 2 – Exercise and Use of Assistive Devices for Mobility

  1. Role of exercises in falls prevention
  2. Introduction to the Otago Exercise for Elderly
  3. Use of Mobility Assistive Devices for mobility

 

Module 3 – Medications and Fall Risk in the Elderly

  1. Discuss strategies to prevent falls due to medications
  2. Identify medications associated with falls in the elderly

 

Please Note:

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.

Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Therapy Assistants, Staff Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Nursing Aides, & Care Associates from community care sector

Mr Audi Fehdurani

Senior Physiotherapy Educator, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Mr Audi is a Senior Physiotherapy Educator in KWSH with over 12 years of experience in clinical healthcare settings. He holds a Master of Science in Rehabilitation (Neurological), and his experience in teaching includes bedside, classroom, and online settings. His clinical interests include falls, gait rehabilitation, neural bases of recovery, exercise prescription for the neurological population, and science of learning.

Ms Sim Puay Cheng

Senior Nurse Educator, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital

Ms Sim is a registered nurse with over 30 years of clinical experience and SRFAC-accredited chief instructor. She is currently working as a Senior Nurse Educator at Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH). She holds several qualifica-tions: Master of Arts (Human Resource Development) (SIM-George Wash-ington University, USA / 1999), Bachelor of Nursing (La Trobe University, Australia / 1993), Post-Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (National Institute of Education / Singapore / 2013), and WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training & Assessment (CBLD, Singapore / 2010). Her area of specialization includes critical care, gerontology, infection control and nursing education.

Course Fees: $262.25 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in eligible community care organisations.
