Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS

This 8 hour program enable participants to recognise early signs of stroke (brain attack), risk factors, neurodiagnostic investigations and multidisciplinary team approach in the management and nursing care of stroke clients followed by rehabilitative aspect of care.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • comprehend ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes and its physical effects on the client.
  • participate in multidisciplinary team approach in the management and nursing care of client with stroke.
  • handle stroke client with emotional response and other effects of stroke like communication and swallowing challenges.
  • practise good body mechanics in positioning, moving and transfers of bed ridden client with stroke.
  • guide mild stroke client with daily maintenance exercises.
  • familiarize with community resources, caregiver support and stroke support group.

 

COURSE OUTLINE

  1. Overview of ischemic and haemorrhagic strokes and its physical effects on the client.
  2. Multidisciplinary team approach in the management and nursing care of stroke patient.
  3. Handling of emotional response and other effects of stroke on communication and swallowing challenges.
  4. Render rehabilitation support care.

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.

Tan Siew Hong

Adjunct Lecturer, Nanyang Polytechnic

Ms Tan Siew Hong is an adjunct lecturer with over 47 years of experience and is currently working in NYP, as well as Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU as an adjunct clinical practice facilitator. She holds a Master’s in Nursing Studies from Deakin University, Melbourne Australia (1996). Prior to joining NYP, Ms Tan has also worked in Tan Tock Seng hospital as the staff nurse nursing officer, and the School of Nursing as a Nursing Tutor. Her area of specialization includes a post graduate certificate in Neuroscience Nursing from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney (Australia), curriculum development for advanced diploma in Nursing (Neuroscience) programme and Diploma in Nursing programme, and as a Chief Instructor and trainer for BCLS + AED, standard first aid course.

Course Fees: $355.14 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in
eligible community care organisations.
