Course Overview
COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS
This course aims to equip and update learners on infection control principles and practices to enable them to function effectively in their respective clinical areas. As infection prevention and control is an integral part of healthcare delivery, nurses and health professionals have an important role to play to ensure that their own safety, safety of other healthcare workers, clients and visitors.
Surveillance is an essential component of an effective infection prevention and control program. It is an organized method for collecting, analyzing and sharing information to improve the outcome being measured. Therefore, it is important for
learners to understand the surveillance methods, data collection, analysis and interpretation to prevent or reduce infection rates.
A trained infection control committee lead will be able to provide adequate oversight over the infection control process, and ensure the organisation has an infection control program, documented infection control activities and written policies/ guidelines to deal with any outbreak. The ICC lead will also be able to coordinate and monitor compliance with internal infection control procedures and ensure proper disinfection and disposal of infectious waste materials by licensed biohazard waste disposal operators, in accordance with all relevant laws and requirements.
COURSE OBJECTIVES / OUTLINE
At the end of the course, learners should be able to:
- Explain the epidemiology of infectious diseases
- Discuss the chain of infection in disease transmission
- Understand the morphology of micro-organisms and disease-causing pathogens
- State the components of infection control programme
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of infection control committee members
- Discuss the components of standard and transmission-based precautions
- Illustrate preventive measures to control spread of infectious diseases
- Outline key principles in environmental cleaning guidelines
- State the major steps in outbreak management
- Recognize the important aspects in pandemic preparedness
- Describe the overview of renovation and construction
- Understand the principles of conducting IPC audits
- Identify improvement opportunities to enhance and sustain IPC
- Explain the needs for IPC training and education
- Role of Antimicrobial Management in NH Facilities
- Understand the definition and objectives of surveillance
- Understand the essential elements for surveillance of healthcare associated infections
- Learn the surveillance methodology
- Learn the process of collecting surveillance data
- Learn how to calculate and analyzed surveillance data
- Learn the importance of communicating results of healthcare associated infection surveillance
- Learn how to identify healthcare associated infection outbreak from surveillance data

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.
Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents and 45% for Work Pass Holders working in eligible community care organisations.
