Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS

This course aims to equip and update learners on infection control principles and practices to enable them to function effectively in their respective clinical areas. As infection prevention and control is an integral part of healthcare delivery, nurses and health professionals have an important role to play to ensure that their own safety, safety of other healthcare workers, clients and visitors. 

Surveillance is an essential component of an effective infection prevention and control program. It is an organized method for collecting, analyzing and sharing information to improve the outcome being measured. Therefore, it is important for

learners to understand the surveillance methods, data collection, analysis and interpretation to prevent or reduce infection rates. 

A trained infection control committee lead will be able to provide adequate oversight over the infection control process, and ensure the organisation has an infection control program, documented infection control activities and written policies/ guidelines to deal with any outbreak. The ICC lead will also be able to coordinate and monitor compliance with internal infection control procedures and ensure proper disinfection and disposal of infectious waste materials by licensed biohazard waste disposal operators, in accordance with all relevant laws and requirements.  

COURSE OBJECTIVES / OUTLINE 

At the end of the course, learners should be able to: 

  1.  Explain the epidemiology of infectious diseases 
  2. Discuss the chain of infection in disease transmission 
  3. Understand the morphology of micro-organisms and disease-causing pathogens
  4. State the components of infection control programme 
  5. Identify the roles and responsibilities of infection control committee members
  6. Discuss the components of standard and transmission-based precautions
  7. Illustrate preventive measures to control spread of infectious diseases
  8. Outline key principles in environmental cleaning guidelines 
  9. State the major steps in outbreak management
  10. Recognize the important aspects in pandemic preparedness 
  11. Describe the overview of renovation and construction 
  12. Understand the principles of conducting IPC audits
  13. Identify improvement opportunities to enhance and sustain IPC 
  14. Explain the needs for IPC training and education
  15. Role of Antimicrobial Management in NH Facilities
  16. Understand the definition and objectives of surveillance 
  17. Understand the essential elements for surveillance of healthcare associated infections 
  18. Learn the surveillance methodology 
  19. Learn the process of collecting surveillance data 
  20. Learn how to calculate and analyzed surveillance data 
  21. Learn the importance of communicating results of healthcare associated infection surveillance 
  22. Learn how to identify healthcare associated infection outbreak from surveillance data

A minimum of 75% attendance will be required for you to complete the programme and receive your certificate.
Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents and 45% for Work Pass Holders working in eligible community care organisations.

Ms Mohanaa D/O Letchman Naidu

Senior Lecturer, Parkway College

Ms Mohanna is a senior lecturer in Parkway College of Nursing and Allied Health with over 22 years of experience in the healthcare and education industry. She holds a master in health service management from Griffith University (2018). Prior to working in Parkway College, she has also worked in Farrer Park Hospital and Changi General Hospital as a Nurse Educator/Nurse Clinician. Her area of specialization includes healthcare management, infection prevention and control, perioperative nursing and education and training. She also has related experience as a hospital infection control nurse assessing needs, developing goals and measurable objectives, and preparing lesson plans for educational trainings; preparing, presenting and coordinating educational workshops, lectures, discussions on a variety of infection prevention and control topics; applying critical reading skills to evaluate research findings; and incorporating research findings into practice through education and consultation.

Malathi Maruthasalamoorthy

Assistant Nurse Clinician/ICN

Ms Malathi is a Lecturer/Clinical Trainer in St Luke’s Hospital with over 22 years of experience. Her area of Specialization are Orthopedics (Completed Advance Diploma in Orthopedics in 2012) &
Infection Control(Completed APSIC Basic Training Course, Infection Control in August 2017)

Course Fees: $1800.00 (excluding GST)

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/ PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in eligible community care organisations.
